We have officially entered winter here at camp. It is raining hard and snow is not far behind. What matters most to me though, is my daughter, Sutter, is home from UC Davis for Winter Break. Just having her lounging in the house, makes me feel complete and satisfied.

We have had a big fall at Coppercreek. We had our second reunion in September and had so much fun. Next year, the dates are set for August 25th-28th. The weekend is relaxed, full of lots of gab, some activities, a few beverages, and plenty of laughs. Slowly, we are finding Coppercreek alumni. The social media is working wonders at digging up past campers and staff. Please consider joining us.

Coppercreek was seen on national TV just last week. We were featured in an episode of "Strange Days with Bob Saget" on A&E Television. You can still view the complete video online. Bob spent 5 days with us during the summer of 2010 and made a "docucomedy" about going to summer camp. What touched me was the scene featuring Zach Lusby, Karly Eichner's son (remember Karly from the 70's and 80's?), talking about why camp is special. I loved having an alumna's child speaking to the nation.

Indian Head is covered in clouds but I know he is still up there snoozing with his blanket pulled over his chest. Happy Holidays!

2ND ANNUAL COPPERCREEK REUNION!

2nd Annual

COPPERCREEK CAMP REUNION!

September 17-19, 2010

Friday-Sunday

Open to anyone who ever attended as a camper or worked at Coppercreek Camp, their significant others and little ones. Relive summer memories, stay in the same cabins (well, almost the same), swim in the pool (it is definitely the same), sneak out… (there will be no Rat Patrol!)…visit Vespers, sit at campfire and sing Country Roads one more time or just relax on the back deck and toast Keddie Peak. The “Sleeping Indian” is still beautiful. Adults- $225.00 (for the weekend) Children ages 5 – 10 $75.00 (for the weekend) Children 4 and under are free.

***All proceeds will go to the Coppercreek Memorial Fund to provide camperships for needy children.***

This covers all meals and lodging – Please bring your choice of beverage or alcohol. Iced tea, lemonade, and wonderful, “ole Kool Aid” will be provided. We have refrigerator space and an ice machine now! Wonderful Coppercreek spring water is still as refreshing as it was years ago.

We are planning evening campfire programs so come prepared to share your favorite camp song and put on a skit or two. If you play a musical instrument; bring that too! You can reserve a cabin or bunk. The old, metal army bunks have been upgraded to built-in bunks so when the person above you gets up to visit the Shower House at 1:00 am, the entire bunk doesn’t wobble. You are also welcome to pitch a tent or bring an RV. There is plenty of space.

We can accommodate around 150 people so get your name on the list soon! The cabins will be booked on a first come, first served basis. Just fill out the attached PDF and mail it in with your payment. We can also take credit cards.

We can’t wait to see you!

Greetings from Monty Martinez - the dishwasher from CCC in 1969

April 22, 2010.

Hi,

I’m Marcelino…..the Coppercreek Dishwasher from Summer 1969.

I am very sorry to learn that John and Lynne passed on. Where is Eric? I still have the walking stick Eric made for me in July 1969.

I enjoyed my wonderful summer with you very much. I took many rolls of pictures with my old Minolta Autocord TLR of the staff and campers. David Spriggs; Clothilde Duffer-Kennedy was the RN from SF State; Linda Manning; and Bonnie Needham were counselors; plus students from Stanford University [whose names I have forgotten]. I think I still have them in an old album, somewhere.

Together, we watched the Moon walk and landing in 1969 with John and Lynne in the living room of their home; went in David Spriggs’ old VW van to the Taylorville Rodeo; and sailed the nearly-by lake with Kit Kurtz, another counselor from Chico State.

Angela Graham, a descendent of the famed Robert the Bruce of Scotland, and Patricia Corke were campers I remember the most. I also remember Sally Friedman of Glen Park, San Francisco.

I am glad that Coppercreek is still in existence and that you are carrying on the tradition.

Since that Summer of 1969, I

• completed two master’s degrees;

• retired as a Lieutenant Commander, Medical Service Corps, U.S. Navy; travelled as a Hospital Corpsman and as a Medical Service Corps officer to the war in 1974 South Vietnam, Korean DMZ, the Philippines, Japan, Canada, Belgium; England, France, and Mexico;

• worked in the CA State Legislature for the Speaker of the Assembly;

• lobbied for Kissinger & McLarthy on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.; and,

• served as a delegate to the 1996 and 2000 Democratic National Conventions; represented my south Stockton, CA, district for the Democratic Party from 1994-2004; served as Co-Chair of the CA Democratic Health Care and Platform Committee from 1999-2004; and received an award as the “Most Outstanding Democrat” for Amador, Calaveras, Madera, Merced, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, etc. in 2003

My life has been immeasurably enriched by the experiences and memories of the Summer of 1969.

I work for a wonderful company, Walden House, Inc., in SF.

I owe much of what has become of my life during the past four decades to the 90 days I spent at Coppercreek.

Thank you.

M. Monty Martinez, MPA, MS-HCA
Assistant to the Vice President of Mental Health Services
Walden House, Incorporated

In a later email, Monty added:

I last spoke with David Spriggs in March 1970 right after I accepted a position with the Elections Department of Sacramento County. I had intended to return to CCC for Summer 1970, but I declined to do so. I stayed with Sacramento County for three years; moved on to Yolo County as their Elections Supervisor; and, then served a short one year as Consultant to the Joint Assembly-Senate Legislative Committee on Aging under Assembly Speaker Bob Moretti before moving on a twenty year career (4 reserve+16 active) in the U.S. Navy.

Storm- Part 1

Thank goodness there are men on Earth during these days.

Oooooppppsssss! Where is that man?

Free! Cancel the man.

Patience and Chloe heard the Breakfast bell ring.

Remember this face from the last blog?

Well, here is another. Do you think Zip dared Peli to touch the fence with his tongue?

You decide.

Isn't this why we have children?

"Come on Cranky Hanky. Even with strawberries on top?"

I think it is time for MY breakfast!

Rainy day at the barn

This is what greets me every time I feed. Regardless of the weather.

This is what horses do when they don't have t.v.

These guys kept it up for about 30 minutes.

Housekeeping? Room service? Cool.

These are my compost piles. I am very proud of my compost piles.

This is my "hot" pile.

 Self Portrait.
The hat was given to me by Karly and Zach Lusby. Really awesome people. Karly came to camp in the 1970's and now Zach comes. It has become my favorite hat.

Worming day at the barn

Today was worming day at the barn. Anyone who has horses knows this is a particularly yucky day. You definitely don't want to wear any new Christmas clothes or try to look cute. Lucky thought he was interested...

Until I did this to him. He quickly beat it. Notice how much wormer is on the front of my jacket.

Next was the cagey mustang, Billy. The only way to catch Billy is to send in Linda to get him. Linda is our barn lady who never does anything mean to Billy like worm him or vaccinate him. Linda has to catch him for our farrier too.

Billy is wondering why I have an apron on with tubes in it. He quickly found out. Poor guy.

Do mustangs get worms in the wild?
